would a small dog get killed quickly by a coyote when a person is walking them?
I have just lost my small sheltie, and we are thinking that it may have been a coyote, because there are tons of dens nerby and we live outside a small town in Alberta, Canada. He went missing at around 11 an my mother was listening to her ipod walking with both our dogs. (one’s a big black mutt, and a sheltie) And then she noticed that my dog Ace (sheltie) went into the bushes and hasn’t came out, so she thinks that he will come back when she turns back around, so when she comes back she calls for him, he doesn’t come out. She thinks that he just went across the creek to my aunt’s house. few hours later after calling my aunt to find he isn’t there or at my neighbors, she calls again. still no sign. this is day four and still nothing, not even any hairs left. There are few things that is keeping up my hope, that he may have been scared and took off across our field and went somewhere else or that someone picked him up, or that a coyote got him, but i can’t understand this because my other dog did not respond or anything, my mom never even heard a yap, because she said that she wasn’t listening to her music that loud. Also another worry is that my grandad says there is a wolf out around our place to, he knows this because he is an experienced hunter, he even went and saw all 20 and some of the dens but there is nothing that showed of any recent activity.
so my question is how fast can a coyote or wolf kill a small sheltie without another dog and a owner not hear anything?
thank you for reading this i hope you can answer
I dont think a coyote would b brave enough to get that near a human even if there was a small dog near. i think u should continue to look, but in a month, u can almost be certain it was a coyote. Oh yh, and next time, always use a leash!

if they are hungry enough – yes. i live in B.C. Canada and they seem to be everywhere. i have two large dogs but i am still cautious when i go out for walks especially in the evenings. coyotes here seem to be malnourished and they will eat just about anything – quickly.

Yes, they can & it happens in a split of a second. So fast you don’t even have time to do anything about it.
A woman I knew used to walk the ditch banks next to the river. She walked with 7 dogs. Most were large breed dogs, dobermans, rotts, GSDs & one little poodle. The poodle liked to take the lead & one day a coyote jumped up from the Bosque & snatch that little poodle, never to be seen again.

It probably got bitten by a snake and died in the brush

a coyote would run from you unless it was sick they are shy……but if your dog gets to far away from you yes a coyote can carry it off and kill it…a wolf is much braver and could come right up to you and take your dog…

I’m sorry to hear that! That could easily happen. I was outside in my yard with my small dog when I coyote started to make its way towards it. I ran at it and it left. To deal with this problem I am taking my recurve bow and some good hunting arrowheads out into the woods to tract it down to protect my dog. You should do something similar to prevent that from happening again.
